Saturday Scenario: How to make a Best Friend

Updated: Sep 30, 2022

The prompt:

You're going to teach us how to make a best friend. You can use any means necessary. You can describe your own best friend and how you met and what led to being more than just a friend but launch into best friends.

My response:

Father told me a tale once about it. It took me a long time, but I finally found his notes. I've read them so many times, I can recite them in my sleep. Oh Grandfather... I hope I haven't. I don't want anyone stopping me now, not when I'm so close.

I mold and shape the clay into that of a little boy. Four legs I'll give him, and a long tail. And wings too. Pretty feathered wings. Or maybe not. Feathers are hard.

A long neck to wrap around me. Warm too. Maybe fire breathing would be nice. I steal a furnace gem from Father's collection. He won't even notice.

A pinch of friendship, a dash of loyalty, a heavy spoonful of bravery, honesty, and kindness each. Heart will be the toughest. You can't fake that. Hmm...maybe I can give him one of mine. I have two, but do I need both? Hmm. No. No, I don't think I do.

I stand back and look at my creation. He's beautiful. But I've forgotten a few things. I steal a brain from my aunt's collection, add in a few obscure tomes of knowledge, a handful of courage, and then I pour molten strength, vitality, and dexterity over the top. Standing back, I see the creature I've created.

All that's left to do is breath it life. I do; he stirs. Slow at first, he takes a moment to lumber upright. Looking down upon me, I know what I will call him.

"Hello, my friend, my Dragon. I am Hephesta. Will you play with me?"
